When does my trailer need a safety certificate?
For trailers over 750kg and up to 4,500kg ATM, it is generally needed for a registration transfer, interstate registration change or re-registration. In a registered private sale, obtain it before handover; advertising can begin earlier. Exemptions apply.

What if my trailer is 750kg or less, or over 4,500kg?
Trailers with an ATM of 750kg or less do not require a safety certificate, although registration and identification requirements still apply. Heavy trailers over 4,500kg ATM use the certificate of inspection system. Send the identification plate details so we can confirm the appropriate service.

What does a trailer roadworthy inspection check?
The inspector checks applicable trailer requirements, including tyres, wheels, lights, reflectors, coupling, safety connections, chassis, suspension and brakes where required. The inspection assesses basic safety, rather than providing a comprehensive condition assessment or a guarantee of future reliability.
Can you inspect my trailer at home or work?
Our mobile service covers Brisbane Northside, Brisbane Southside and the Gold Coast. Provide the inspection address, access details and a suitable clear area. The team confirms location suitability, any travel charge and whether a suitable tow vehicle is needed.
How should I prepare my trailer?
Have registration and identification plate details ready. Secure the trailer on level ground with suitable wheel chocks and its parking brake applied where fitted. Clear loose items and tell us about faults or modifications. The 14 trailer self-checks below help you prepare; they do not replace the inspection.
Can a modified or homemade trailer be inspected?
Contact us before booking with the trailer’s identification, weight and modification details. Bring any approval or construction paperwork. Registration and inspection requirements vary with its history and design; the team will confirm suitability.

What happens if my trailer passes?
Your safety certificate is issued when the trailer meets the inspection requirements. For a registration transfer, give the buyer a current certificate. Ask the team how you will receive it and what to do next.

What happens if my trailer fails?
You receive a report identifying the issues that need attention. Ask the inspector any questions, arrange the required repairs, then contact our team about reinspection. Confirm the timeframe, appointment and any reinspection charge. A certificate can only be issued once the trailer meets the requirements.
How long is a trailer safety certificate valid for?
Private sellers have a 2-month or 2,000km limit from issue, whichever comes first. For licensed dealers, the limit is 3 months or 1,000km. One certificate permits one transfer.

Before your inspection
14 Quick Self-Checks
People often ask what they can do prior to their roadworthy or safety certificate inspection. A few optional self-checks before your appointment can help you spot obvious problems and organise repairs early. Start with your trailer secured on level ground with suitable wheel chocks and its parking brake applied where fitted.
Lights & Indicators
With the trailer safely secured and connected to a suitable tow vehicle, check tail lights, brake lights, indicators and number-plate lighting. Check other fitted lights and replace damaged lenses or faulty bulbs.
Reflectors & Marker Lights
Check that reflectors and fitted clearance or side-marker lights are clean, secure and undamaged. Tell the inspector about missing fittings or changes to the trailer’s body or dimensions.
Tyres & Tread
Check all tyres for worn tread, cuts, cracks, bulges and uneven wear. Use a tread-depth gauge and the manufacturer’s pressure guidance. Ask a tyre professional to confirm suitable load ratings and assess tyres that have deteriorated during storage.
Wheels & Wheel Nuts
Look for damaged wheels or missing wheel nuts without loosening anything. Leave fastener tightness, wheel suitability and wheel-bearing checks to a qualified professional.
Coupling & Latch
Look for visible coupling damage, loose parts or a latch that does not secure correctly. Confirm compatibility with the tow vehicle using the manufacturer’s instructions. Have worn or damaged towing components professionally assessed before towing.
Safety Chains & Connections
Look for damaged chain links, corrosion and insecure attachment points. Check the connections against the manufacturer’s instructions. Ask a professional to confirm the suitability of chains and connecting hardware.
Drawbar & Chassis
From an accessible position, look for cracks, corrosion or damage around the drawbar, chassis and mounting points. Tell the inspector about repairs or modifications. Do not crawl under an unsupported trailer.
Brakes Where Fitted
Look for damaged cables, hoses or visible fluid leaks on fitted brake equipment. Report poor braking or dragging brakes. Ask the inspector to confirm the brake requirements for your trailer and leave performance testing to a professional.
Breakaway System Where Fitted
Check for visibly damaged breakaway cables, switches or wiring where fitted. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for routine checks, or use a qualified technician. Ask the inspector to confirm what equipment your trailer needs.
Suspension & Axles
Look for damaged springs, visibly loose components or a trailer that sits unevenly. Report unusual noises and uneven tyre wear. Leave axle alignment, bearing and suspension checks to a professional.
Wiring & Plug
Check the towing plug and accessible wiring for damaged insulation, loose connections or cables that could drag or be pinched. Arrange repairs to damaged wiring and verify that the lights work after connecting.
Bodywork, Floor & Guards
Look for loose panels, sharp edges, damaged flooring and insecure mudguards. Check gates and latches, and clear loose items so the inspector can access the trailer safely.
Jockey Wheel & Fittings
Check that the jockey wheel and other fitted equipment are secure and can be stowed for travel. Look for damaged mounts or missing locking parts. Keep hands clear of pinch points and do not rely on a jockey wheel to support work underneath.
Identification & Modifications
Have registration and identification-plate details ready. Tell the inspector about changes to the body, axles, suspension or coupling, and bring any available approval paperwork. Confirm vehicle suitability and inspection access before the appointment.
