When do I need a car roadworthy certificate or car safety certificate?

In Queensland, a safety certificate is generally needed to transfer a car’s registration to a new owner, transfer interstate registration to Queensland, or re-register an unregistered car. For a registered private sale, obtain it before handover; it is not needed just to advertise. Exemptions apply in some circumstances.

What does the car inspection check?

The inspection checks minimum safety standards, including tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, body rust or damage, windscreen and lights. It is not a comprehensive mechanical assessment or a guarantee of the car’s future condition. For a buying decision, ask about our separate pre-purchase car inspection.

Can you inspect my car at home or work?

We provide mobile car inspections across Brisbane Northside, Brisbane Southside and the Gold Coast. Share your address, parking arrangements and any gate or access restrictions so the team can confirm whether the location is suitable and whether a travel charge applies.

How should I prepare my car?

Have your car’s make, model and registration details ready, along with the inspection address and access instructions. Park safely on level ground and make the car accessible. The 14 quick self-checks below can help you spot obvious issues before the visit; they do not replace the inspection.

How long does it take and how do I book?

Use Fast Online Booking to send your car and location details, or call 0401 813 031. The team will confirm availability, the appointment arrangements and how much time to allow for your car. Tell us if you have a sale or registration deadline so we can discuss a suitable appointment.

What happens if my car passes?

A safety certificate is issued when the car meets the inspection requirements. For a registration transfer, provide the current certificate to the buyer. Ask the team how you will receive your certificate and what to do next for your circumstances.

What happens if my car fails or needs a reinspection?

Do not panic, these things happen occasionally! You will receive a report identifying the issues that need attention. You can ask our inspector any questions you may have. Simply arrange the required repairs, then contact the team to organise a reinspection. Confirm the applicable timeframe, booking arrangements and any reinspection charge before proceeding; a certificate can only be issued once the car meets the requirements.

How long is a Roadworthy certificate valid for?

For private sellers, Queensland safety certificates are valid for 2 months or 2,000 km from issue, whichever comes first. Licensed motor dealers have a 3-month or 1,000 km limit. A certificate can be used for only one transfer.

Before your inspection

14 Quick Self-Checks

People often ask what they can do prior to their roadworthy or safety certificate inspection. A few optional self-checks before your appointment can help you spot obvious problems and organise repairs early. Start with your car safely parked on level ground, with the parking brake applied.

  1. Lights & Indicators

Check low and high beams, indicators, hazard lights, brake lights and reversing lights where fitted. Ask someone to help check the rear lights while the car is safely secured. Look for dim or flickering bulbs and damaged lenses.

  2. Tyres & Tread

Look for worn tread, exposed wear indicators, cuts, cracks, bulges and uneven wear. Use a proper tread-depth gauge rather than a coin, and check pressures against the vehicle’s tyre placard. Have a tyre professional assess damage or tread you are unsure about.

  3. Brakes & Parking Brake

Tell your mechanic about a soft or sinking brake pedal, grinding noises, pulling to one side or a parking brake that does not hold securely. Do not drive a car with suspected brake faults. Leave brake-performance testing to a qualified professional.

  4. Wipers & Washers

Check that the wipers move smoothly and clear the windscreen without leaving heavy streaks. Replace split or perished blades, top up washer fluid and make sure the jets spray onto the glass. Check the rear wiper and washer if fitted.

  5. Horn

Give the horn a brief check while parked somewhere suitable. It should operate reliably and sound clearly. If it is weak, intermittent or silent, arrange a repair before your inspection.

  6. Mirrors & Glass

Make sure mirrors are secure, adjustable and give a clear view. Check the windscreen and windows for chips, cracks or damage that affects visibility. Whether glass damage is acceptable depends on its size, location and the inspection criteria.

  7. Seatbelts & Buckles

Check every seatbelt for cuts, fraying or other damage. Pull it out and allow it to retract, then check that the buckle latches and releases correctly. A damaged belt or faulty buckle needs professional attention.

  8. Fluid Leaks

Look for fresh drips beneath the car after it has been parked on a clean, level surface. Clear water from air conditioning can be normal, but unexplained fluid loss needs checking. Do not identify fluids by colour alone or crawl under an unsupported vehicle.

  9. Bodywork & Rust

Walk around the car and look for loose panels, sharp edges, insecure parts and signs of corrosion. Rust near structural or mounting points needs particular attention. Surface appearance alone cannot confirm whether corrosion is safe.

  10. Exhaust & Smoke

Notice any unusual exhaust noise, rattling, fumes or persistent smoke. These can indicate a fault that needs diagnosis. Only run the engine in an open, well-ventilated area, and avoid touching hot exhaust components.

  11. Steering & Suspension

Report unusual steering play, heavy steering, clunks, persistent bouncing or a car that sits unevenly. These symptoms need professional assessment. The inspector checks components that are not always visible during a walk-around.

  12. Seats & Door Latches

Check that seats are secure and their adjustment mechanisms lock into position. Doors, the bonnet and the boot should close and latch properly. Tell the inspector about missing seats, damaged hinges or catches that do not hold securely.

  13. Dashboard Warning Lights

Follow your owner’s manual to check the normal warning-light sequence at start-up. If a brake, ABS, airbag or other fault warning stays on, arrange diagnosis. Do not disconnect or cover a warning lamp to hide a fault.

  14. Wheels & Fasteners

Look for visible wheel damage or missing wheel nuts. Leave checks of wheel bearings, fastener tightness and wheel suitability to a qualified professional. Tell the inspector about aftermarket wheels, suspension changes or other modifications.
