When does my light truck need a safety certificate?

Eligible trucks up to 4,500 kg GVM generally need one for a registration transfer, interstate registration transfer to Queensland or re-registration. You can advertise a registered truck without one, but must obtain it before a private-sale handover unless exempt.

Queensland Government inspection guidance

What if my truck is over 4.5 tonnes or is a tow truck?

Trucks above 4,500 kg GVM generally need a certificate of inspection (COI). Licensed tow trucks require a COI even at lower weights. Provider requirements depend on the category. Tell our team the GVM and registered use before booking so they can confirm suitability.

Are there safety certificate exemptions?

Examples include some spouse or deceased-estate transfers and exempt-area situations. Selling an unregistered truck or trading to a licensed dealer does not require a safety certificate. Check your circumstances with TMR.

What does the inspection check?

The inspector applies the relevant Queensland criteria to tyres, wheels, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, visibility, restraints and vehicle structure. Tray or body fittings and modifications also need assessment where applicable. A safety certificate is not a comprehensive mechanical evaluation or a reliability guarantee.

Can you inspect a modified or older light truck?

Send details of tray conversions, suspension changes, towing equipment or other modifications when enquiring. Have approval paperwork available where applicable. Requirements depend on the vehicle and its applicable standards; our team confirms suitability before the appointment.

How do I prepare for the mobile inspection?

Provide registration or VIN details, GVM, truck use and the inspection address. Arrange safe, level parking with room to access the truck. Tell us about site access restrictions and faults. Secure equipment and clear loose items from the cab and cargo area. The self-check guide below helps you spot obvious issues.

How long will it take?

The team confirms availability, arrival arrangements and how much time to allow after receiving your vehicle and location details. Mention any sale or registration deadline when enquiring.

What happens if my light truck fails?

No worries. You receive a report explaining the issues that need attention. Arrange the required repairs and contact our team to confirm reinspection timing, availability and any charge. We issue a safety certificate once the truck meets the applicable requirements.

How long is a light truck safety certificate valid?

For private sellers: 2 months or 2,000 km from issue, whichever comes first. For licensed dealers: 3 months or 1,000 km. A certificate permits one transfer. COIs have different validity rules.

Before your inspection

14 Quick Self-Checks

People often ask what they can do prior to their roadworthy or safety certificate inspection. A few optional self-checks before your appointment can help you spot obvious problems and organise repairs early. Start with your light truck safely parked on level ground, with the parking brake applied.

  1. Lights & Indicators

Check low and high beams, indicators, hazard lights, brake lights and reversing lights where fitted. Ask someone to help check the rear lights while the light truck is safely secured. Look for dim or flickering bulbs and damaged lenses.

  2. Tyres & Tread

Check all tyres, including inner tyres where dual wheels are fitted, for worn tread, cuts, bulges and uneven wear. Use a tread-depth gauge and the manufacturer’s pressure guidance. Ask a tyre professional to confirm suitable tyre load ratings and assess any damage.

  3. Brakes & Parking Brake

Tell your mechanic about a soft or sinking brake pedal, grinding noises, pulling to one side or a parking brake that does not hold securely. Do not drive a light truck with suspected brake faults. Leave brake-performance testing to a qualified professional.

  4. Wipers & Washers

Check that the wipers move smoothly and clear the windscreen without leaving heavy streaks. Replace split or perished blades, top up washer fluid and make sure the jets spray onto the glass. Check the rear wiper and washer if fitted.

  5. Horn

Give the horn a brief check while parked somewhere suitable. It should operate reliably and sound clearly. If it is weak, intermittent or silent, arrange a repair before your inspection.

  6. Mirrors & Glass

Make sure mirrors are secure, adjustable and give a clear view. Check the windscreen and windows for chips, cracks or damage that affects visibility. Whether glass damage is acceptable depends on its size, location and the inspection criteria.

  7. Seatbelts & Buckles

Check every seatbelt for cuts, fraying or other damage. Pull it out and allow it to retract, then check that the buckle latches and releases correctly. A damaged belt or faulty buckle needs professional attention.

  8. Fluid Leaks

Look for fresh drips beneath the light truck after it has been parked on a clean, level surface. Clear water from air conditioning can be normal, but unexplained fluid loss needs checking. Do not identify fluids by colour alone or crawl under an unsupported vehicle.

  9. Bodywork, Tray & Rust

Look for sharp edges, loose panels, damaged tray or cargo-body fittings and signs of structural corrosion. Check that tailgates, sides and fitted equipment are secure. Clear the tray or cargo area of loose items so the inspector can access it safely.

  10. Exhaust & Smoke

Notice any unusual exhaust noise, rattling, fumes or persistent smoke. These can indicate a fault that needs diagnosis. Only run the engine in an open, well-ventilated area, and avoid touching hot exhaust components.

  11. Steering & Suspension

Report unusual steering play, heavy steering, clunks, persistent bouncing or a light truck that sits unevenly. These symptoms need professional assessment. The inspector checks components that are not always visible during a walk-around.

  12. Seats & Door Latches

Check that seats are secure and their adjustment mechanisms lock into position. Doors, the bonnet and the boot should close and latch properly. Tell the inspector about missing seats, damaged hinges or catches that do not hold securely.

  13. Dashboard Warning Lights

Follow your owner’s manual to check the normal warning-light sequence at start-up. If a brake, ABS, airbag or other fault warning stays on, arrange diagnosis. Do not disconnect or cover a warning lamp to hide a fault.

  14. Wheels & Fasteners

Look for damaged wheels or missing wheel nuts without removing or loosening anything. Have a qualified professional check wheel bearings, fasteners and wheel suitability. Tell the inspector about tray conversions, towing equipment, suspension changes or other modifications.
