Caravan Roadworthy FAQs

What does a mobile caravan inspection cost?

Loading current caravan inspection pricing…

Locations outside our service area may incur a small travel charge. Confirm your inspection cost and appointment using our fast online booking form. Ask separately about gas certification and any additional checks.

When does a caravan need a safety certificate?

Usually for a registration transfer, interstate registration or re-registration. The safety certificate category covers caravans over 750kg and up to 4,500kg ATM. You can advertise a registered caravan before obtaining one, but generally need a current certificate before handing it over.

Queensland Government inspection guidance

What if my caravan is 750kg or less, or over 4,500kg?

Caravans at or below 750kg ATM do not need a safety certificate. Above 4,500kg ATM, a certificate of inspection applies instead. Send the identification-plate details before booking so the team can confirm the appropriate service.

Are there exemptions?

Examples include certain spouse or deceased-estate transfers, exempt areas and sales to licensed dealers. Confirm your circumstances with TMR before relying on an exemption. Selling unregistered does not remove the inspection requirements for subsequent registration.

Queensland Government inspection guidance

How long is a caravan safety certificate valid?

Private sellers: 2 months or 2,000km from issue, whichever comes first. Licensed dealers: 3 months or 1,000km. A certificate can cover only one transfer.

Queensland Government inspection guidance

Does my caravan need a separate gas certificate?

A caravan with gas fittings or systems generally needs a separate gas inspection certificate for sale or transfer. Gas certification must be arranged with an appropriately authorised specialist. For registration, Queensland requires a certificate less than 3 months old; exemptions may apply.

What does the roadworthy inspection cover?

The inspector assesses applicable caravan safety requirements, including tyres, wheels, brakes, suspension, coupling, chains, lights, chassis and body condition. This is not a comprehensive condition assessment of water damage, appliances or living-area equipment. Arrange separate specialist checks where needed.

Can you inspect a caravan at home, work or storage?

Our mobile service covers Brisbane Northside, Brisbane Southside and the Gold Coast. Provide the address, gate access, parking space and any storage-site permission. Tell us whether a suitable tow vehicle is available. The team confirms inspection arrangements and any travel charge.

What should I have ready?

Have your make, model, registration, VIN and ATM details available, plus any modification approvals. Secure the caravan on level ground, clear access around it and stow loose belongings. Tell us about known faults and gas installations. Use the caravan self-checks below to spot obvious issues.

Is a safety certificate all I need to register my caravan?

Additional identity, vehicle-details or pre-registration checks may apply, particularly for first registration. Registration can also require gas certification, identity and garaging-address evidence. Check TMR’s caravan registration checklist for your circumstances.

What happens if my caravan passes or fails?

A certificate is issued when the caravan meets the inspection requirements. If repairs are needed, your inspector explains the report. Arrange the repairs, then contact the team to confirm the reinspection timeframe, appointment and any charge.

Do you supply on-site gas certification?

We do not supply gas certificates. A gas compliance certificate must be issued by an appropriately licensed gas fitter after the gas system passes inspection. Checks include LPG cylinder test dates, regulators, flexible gas lines, ventilation, isolation valves and appliance operation, along with pressure testing for leaks. Please contact your nearest appropriately licensed gas fitter to arrange a gas inspection and certification.

Before your inspection

14 Quick Self-Checks

People often ask what they can do prior to their roadworthy or safety certificate inspection. A few optional self-checks before your appointment can help you spot obvious problems and organise repairs early. Start with your caravan secured on level ground with suitable wheel chocks and its parking brake applied where fitted.

  1. Lights & Indicators

With the caravan safely secured and connected to a suitable tow vehicle, check tail lights, brake lights, indicators and number-plate lighting. Check other fitted lights and replace damaged lenses or faulty bulbs.

  2. Reflectors & Marker Lights

Check that reflectors and fitted clearance or side-marker lights are clean, secure and undamaged. Tell the inspector about missing fittings or changes to the caravan’s body or dimensions.

  3. Tyres & Tread

Check all tyres for worn tread, cuts, cracks, bulges and uneven wear. Use a tread-depth gauge and the manufacturer’s pressure guidance. Ask a tyre professional to confirm suitable load ratings and assess tyres that have deteriorated during storage.

  4. Wheels & Wheel Nuts

Look for damaged wheels or missing wheel nuts without loosening anything. Leave fastener tightness, wheel suitability and wheel-bearing checks to a qualified professional.

  5. Coupling & Latch

Look for visible coupling damage, loose parts or a latch that does not secure correctly. Confirm compatibility with the tow vehicle using the manufacturer’s instructions. Have worn or damaged towing components professionally assessed before towing.

  6. Safety Chains & Connections

Look for damaged chain links, corrosion and insecure attachment points. Check the connections against the manufacturer’s instructions. Ask a professional to confirm the suitability of chains and connecting hardware.

  7. Drawbar & Chassis

From an accessible position, look for cracks, corrosion or damage around the drawbar, chassis and mounting points. Tell the inspector about repairs or modifications. Do not crawl under an unsupported caravan.

  8. Brakes Where Fitted

Look for damaged cables, hoses or visible fluid leaks on fitted brake equipment. Report poor braking or dragging brakes. Ask the inspector to confirm the brake requirements for your caravan and leave performance testing to a professional.

  9. Breakaway System Where Fitted

Check for visibly damaged breakaway cables, switches or wiring where fitted. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for routine checks, or use a qualified technician. Ask the inspector to confirm what equipment your caravan needs.

  10. Suspension & Axles

Look for damaged springs, visibly loose components or a caravan that sits unevenly. Report unusual noises and uneven tyre wear. Leave axle alignment, bearing and suspension checks to a professional.

  11. Wiring & Plug

Check the towing plug and accessible wiring for damaged insulation, loose connections or cables that could drag or be pinched. Arrange repairs to damaged wiring and verify that the lights work after connecting.

  12. Bodywork, Doors & Windows

Look for sharp edges, loose panels, damaged guards and structural corrosion. Check that the entry door, windows and external lockers secure for travel. Tell the inspector about known water damage or body repairs.

  13. Awnings, Steps & Storage

Secure the awning, steps, stabiliser legs and other fittings in their travel positions. Check storage doors and cupboards, and stow loose belongings. Inspect visible mounts from ground level; leave roof access and damaged fittings to a professional.

  14. Identification & Modifications

Have registration and identification-plate details ready. Tell the inspector about changes to the body, axles, suspension or coupling, and bring any available approval paperwork. Confirm vehicle suitability and inspection access before the appointment.
